Sean Tallon, a son of Irish immigrants, grew up in St. Barnabas Parish in Woodlawn/Yonkers, and graduated from Iona College in 1996. Sean was proud of his Irish heritage – he often played trad tunes on his button accordion. He achieved his dreams of joining the United States Marine Corps, and later the Fire Department of New York.
On 9/11/01, Sean, aged 26, and five other men from FDNY “Ten House” – across the street from the WTC – died in Tower One. Their apparatus was later found underneath 40 feet of rubble.
A memorial to those that died on 9/11 was later erected in the Tallon hometown in Kildare. In 2009 AOH Yonkers started an annual Sean Tallon Gaelic Football Tournament.
AOH Yonkers stated, “Every year it is our honor to be the sole sponsor of the Firefighter Sean Tallon Memorial Gaelic Sports Tournament. It’s a special day to honor and remember Sean and one filled with the joy of children playing the games they love.
“This year’s tournament is scheduled for 11am, Sunday, November 5th at Rockland GAA Field in Orangeburg, NY. Come out and show your support and please share the event flyer.”
